Storytelling photography with couples
Having a photo session with a couple I’ve never met before used to intimidate me…
BUT I needed to realize that they are having this session for a reason. Don’t let it be awkward just ask detailed questions and find out their why. I like to ask my couple’s and I ask my family’s this too, Why are you having this session? Besides the “Oh it’s been forever since they’ve had pictures done!” People like to come off dry especially in questionnaire’s it seems to me anyway. BUT there has to be a reason besides the obvious, so I ask in person at the beginning of the session while I am getting them warmed up, is it an anniversary, okay, how long have y’all been together, where did y’all meet, what is your favorite thing to do together? Be invested in their answers and that shell should start to crack.
Once you know that reason, that’s when you create a story of the photo’s you are about to create. Really involve them in the posing or prompting. Ask them how they would feel to run down a bridge, hand in hand, looking at each other laughing? Sound like something they would do? Go with it. Then prompt him to pick her up and give a slow spin in the air. Slow dancing, twirling, laughter are all the things you want to incorporate into your posing and prompts. Simple always works, you don’t have to make things awkward!
Once you get them laughing, relaxed, and comfortable that’s when I like to get them to settle and get cozy. Since they’ve been laughing and moving they are starting to open up a little. Have him sit with his legs extended facing the camera, have her lay the opposite way on his lap, I always like the legs bent, it’s more flattering, depending on the angle.
Have them look at each other more then they are looking at the camera.
Have them holding hands, touching each other, hands in hair, nose to nose. Then get up close and capture those details.
That’s the beauty of storytelling through photography, you are the director and the audience all at the same time. You take the lead and give them prompts and then you watch the magic unfold.
